The Scarlet Letter is a book of much symbolism. One of the most complex and misunderstood symbols in the book is Pearl, the daughter of Hester Prynne. Throughout the story Pearl develops into a prominent symbol of the "A". This eventually caused so much mental and physical anguish that she eventually questioned why she should live if it weren't for her Pearl. Pearl was a bundle of life sent from god to remind her of her wrong doing each and every moment and as a walking sermon to preach against sin for others.Hester's wasted life the ultimate price that Hester paid for Pearl. With Pearl, Hester's life was almost never filled with joy, but instead a constant reminder of the harsh word adultery. Pearl would also make her own "A" to wear, and sometimes she played games wither her mother's trying to hit it with rocks. When Hester would go into the town with Pearl, the other children would make fun of her and Pearl and would yell and throw dirt at them. So in this case, Pearl symbolized the decimation of Hester's life and mental state. Although Hester had so much trouble with Pearl, she still felt that Pearl was her ultimate treasure. Pearl was really the only thing that Hester had in life. Surely if Pearl wasn't in Hester's life, Hester would have taken her own life. Once and a while, Pearl would bring joy to Hester's life, and that helped her to bare the guilt, lonesomeness, and isolation that became the main theme of her life. Pearl could be compared to weather, sometimes good, sometimes bad, but always changing. It was Pearl's pounding storms that gave Hester so much grief. Pearl's exuberant personality caused Puritans to believe she was a child of witchcraft and a mischievous little elf. But basically she represented everything that was the exact opposite of Puritan belief. Pearl's taunting and malice disposition sometimes even caused Hester to make outbursts like "Thou art not my child! Thou art no Pearl of mine!" Some would believe the "A" stood for anti-puritan for her wild soul could never be confined by the rules of the conservative Puritan Society.

I think police officers are a good help for the communities they serve. Police is necessary in each city to prevent crimes and bring peace to citizens, so they can live in a safe place and knowing that they are protected of the criminals. . The reality of policing is that the police play an extremely complex role in today’s society. This role involves many different tasks. People think that they are always fighting criminals and risking their life in bad situations but as Walker described in his article â€Å"Police and Society† (2001) â€Å"Many studies of police work document the complexity of the police role. The Police Services Study (PSS), for example, examined 26,418 calls for service to the police in three metropolitan areas. As the data in Table 1-1 indicate, only 19 percent of the calls involve crime, and only 2 percent of the total involves violent crime† they spent most of their time in patrolling the city and watching for over speed cars. Every city h as a police department for a purpose and the most important role of the police is to help maintain peace, enforce the laws of the land, protect the people from criminals, and to help ensure the safety of the citizens. Also police officers are important to the government to be protected it against society. They contribute to social control through both law enforcement and order maintenance responsibilities. There are a lot of functions that police should continue to do like prevent and control conduct widely recognized as threatening to life and property, identify problems that have the potential for becoming more serious problems, create and maintain a feeling of security in the community, promote and preserve public order, and help people who are in danger of physical harm, such as the victims of violent attack. These functions are very important to the communities because crimes are increasing day by day  and without the help of police officers there will be chaos in the society and people would not be safe. Although police officers have many different kind of functions and they need to do it, not all functions are that important. They should spend less time in answer calls that are not for criminal purposes like people calling 911 because their neighbor has loud music or bothers them, watching all day for over speed cars, with no lights or plates, and they do not have to abuse the ir power when searching for a guy that is suspicious. They should devote most of their time patrolling the city searching for suspicious people, helping people in need, and maintaining the public order. There are factors that influence the functions of some police officers like their inexperience in the field work, their fear to confront dangerous criminals and get injured, the budget of their police department, or their low salary that make them think they do not have to risk their lives and work harder. In the Canterbury Tales, the skipper had brown tanned skin and was the stout, fearless type. He was not one to be fooled with. He, in fact, was a tough and smart sailor. To cast his role today, a great choice would be Johnny Depp. The Skipper’s physical traits are brief, but say a lot.He wears a woolen gown that reaches his knees, has brown tanned skin, and most importantly has a dagger on a lanyard hanging from around his neck. The reason why the dagger is so important is because it shows that he is tough and fearless. It is almost like a symbol of power. The picture created is of a stout, strong, tough man. Johnny Depp is the first person to come to mind perhaps because of his history with the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series and his brown tanned skin.Behavior speaks louder than appearance in most cases. The skippe r’s behavior was unmerciful. He gave no mercy to the loser’s of fights and immediately made them walk the plank. In Chaucer’s words, he ignored the nicer rules of conscience. In spite of this, the skipper is very smart and a great navigator, which gives the reader the sense that he is also a leader. Domestic and household consumption in UK makes up for 60% of the power used while other users such as industries, utilities, offices and infrastructure consume the rest. Automobiles account for more than 75% of fossil fuel consumption (Williams, 2010). To promote the use of green and clean energy systems, the UK government has initiated a project that funds and supports s olar energy by residential homes (Bullis, 2012). The proposal is called ‘Feed In Tariff – FIT’. This project involves encouraging households to install small solar panels with solar PV that can generate electricity. The Department of Clean Energy of the UK government has provided a number of subsidies, concessions and other benefits to householders who install these units. The UK government plans to buy back the power generated from these units and give tax breaks or a reduction in the regular utility power consumed by the householders (Lewis, 2006; Lock, 2007).
